HYDERABAD: In response to the rising number of daily passengers, Telangana RTC has made a key decision to expand its fleet. To address commuters’ needs, the corporation has begun preparations to introduce 200 additional buses across Greater Hyderabad by July, of which approximately 150 will be electric vehicles.
The Telangana government had earlier launched the Mahalakshmi Scheme, offering free travel for women in RTC buses, which has led to a significant surge in the number of passengers. To ease travel and reduce overcrowding, RTC decided to add more buses to its services.
RTC officials stated that the new buses are expected to be operational by the time educational institutions reopen. Following through on a pre-election promise, the Congress government, after assuming office, swiftly implemented the Mahalakshmi Scheme, resulting in an unexpected increase in passenger numbers on RTC buses.
Currently, the volume of passengers has risen substantially. Drivers and conductors have expressed that launching new buses has become essential to manage the crowds and attract even more commuters.
RTC believes that deploying electric buses will not only benefit the public but also help the government reduce administrative costs.
