Hyderabad: The Telangana Police has launched a comprehensive Safe Mobility Initiative aimed at improving women’s safety in public transport across Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda. The initiative is led by the Women Safety Wing (WSW) in partnership with TSRTC, Metro Rail, the Transport Department, private bus operators, and auto associations.
The program seeks to ensure immediate redressal for women facing harassment while travelling and to establish a culture of accountability through coordinated response systems and public awareness.
Telangana women transport safety: new response protocols introduced
The initiative introduces the following measures:
- Immediate Complaint Redressal: Women experiencing harassment including groping or inappropriate touching—can report it to conductors, drivers, or dial 100/112.
- First Responders: TSRTC conductors and auto drivers are trained to act as the first point of contact. They must immediately escalate complaints to emergency services.
- Nodal Officers: Each participating agency will appoint nodal officers to coordinate operations. The WSW will track case outcomes.
- Real-Time Response: Integrated with Dial 100/112, the system ensures quick deployment of police patrols and She Teams for follow-up investigation.
Public transport staff trained for on-the-spot action
TSRTC conductors have already received training to recognize and report harassment cases. In private buses and autos, either the conductor or affected woman can directly contact police control.
In the metro system, women can trigger in-built alarm systems or call emergency services. Police patrols are set to act immediately upon receiving alerts, with She Teams managing the investigation.
Telangana Police sends clear message on public harassment
Officials said the initiative aims to shift societal attitudes by affirming that “groping, flashing, and eve-teasing are crimes, not culture.” The goal is not just enforcement but deterrence through quick and visible action.
By integrating multiple agencies and standardizing response mechanisms, Telangana Police aims to provide safe, respectful, and harassment-free mobility for women. The initiative also signals zero tolerance toward harassment “anywhere, any time.”
