Hyderabad: Telangana has attracted over ₹50,000 crore in life sciences investments in the past 18 months, according to IT and Industries Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu. Addressing the ET Pharma Tech Innovation Conclave at Hitech City, the minister said the state is laying the foundation for a ₹1 lakh crore long-term investment strategy in the sector.
The inflow has led to the creation of 60,000 new jobs and positioned the state to achieve ₹66,000 crore in exports from the life sciences sector in FY 2024–25.
Hyderabad, already acknowledged as the “Vaccine Capital of the World,” accounts for one-third of global vaccine production. Products like “Made in Telangana” stents and catheters from the Medical Devices Park are now exported to 89 countries, including the US and Japan.
The minister announced that new Pharma Villages will be established in Vikarabad, Nalgonda, and Medak. These clusters aim to decentralize industry and generate five lakh jobs across rural and semi-urban areas. Discussions with stakeholders are ongoing to finalise the model.
Plans are also underway to launch a Life Sciences University aligned with global standards. It will offer industry-specific short- and long-term programs in collaboration with major life sciences companies.
The state is also working with Young India Skills University and firms like Dr. Reddy’s and Aurobindo to provide practical training to youth. Additionally, the World Economic Forum-backed Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution is helping train graduates for high-skill roles in life sciences.
A dedicated ‘Telangana Comprehensive Life Sciences Policy’ is in its final stages and is expected to bolster the state’s global presence in the sector.
Sridhar Babu said Telangana’s focus is not just economic growth but public welfare. He cited AI-based cancer screening pilots for oral, breast, and cervical cancers already underway in three districts. The initiative will soon expand to all government hospitals and medical colleges.
Top pharmaceutical companies participated in the conclave, signalling continued private sector interest in Telangana’s life sciences expansion.
