Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has resolved to escalate pressure on the Centre for securing the state’s rightful share of Krishna and Godavari river waters, along with pending clearances and financial assistance for irrigation projects.
Reddy directed Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy to pursue the matter with the Union government and ensure permanent resolution to long-standing injustices in water allocation. Acting on this directive, Uttam wrote to Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil, detailing grievances and project backlogs.
The letter seeks immediate clearance for Telangana’s Krishna river projects, allocation of funds, and approval for ongoing and proposed works. A meeting with the Jal Shakti Minister is scheduled for July 16 in Delhi to press the demands.
Telangana highlighted that only 299 TMC of Krishna water was allocated to the state, while Andhra Pradesh received 512 TMC. Projects constructed by AP upstream of Srisailam allegedly diverted water without checks.
The letter also outlines how unified Andhra Pradesh failed to allocate water to irrigation projects built on the Krishna river and abandoned the Rs 11,000 crore Pranahita-Chevella project on the Godavari after partial execution, replacing it with the Kaleshwaram project, which the state terms as financially wasteful.
Telangana urged the Centre to intervene immediately in ongoing water disputes and address irregularities in Krishna-Godavari basin management, allocation issues, AP violations, and project delays.
