Hyderabad: The Telangana government has formally requested the Centre to merge five villages adjoining Bhadrachalam town back into the state, after sustained campaigning by Telangana Jagruthi.
The five villages Etapaka, Kannayigudem, Picchukalapadu, Purushottampatnam, and Gundala were shifted to Andhra Pradesh through an ordinance issued by the Centre during the formation of Telangana, which merged seven mandals of the old Khammam district with Andhra.
As a result, land belonging to Bhadrachalam’s historic Sri Sitaramachandra Swamy temple ended up on the Andhra side.
Local residents have faced serious difficulties in education, healthcare, and other services after being moved administratively.
On June 20, Telangana Jagruthi organised a round-table meet titled Polavaram Telangana Pai Jalakhadgam demanding the merger of these villages back with Telangana.
In response to these demands, the state government wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking action to bring the villages back into Telangana’s fold.
Telangana Jagruthi welcomed the move and criticised the previous Congress government for ignoring the issue after coming to power, saying at least now there was some positive response.
They demanded the state continue to apply pressure on the Centre until the merger is achieved.
