Hyderabad: The Telangana government is preparing to transfer the phone tapping case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Minister for Roads and Buildings Komatireddy Venkat Reddy said on Wednesday.
He added that the law would take its own course in the Kaleshwaram, phone tapping, and Formula E race cases. According to him, the state will not use these investigations for political retaliation against opposition parties. He clarified that any future action will depend on the Anti-Corruption Bureau’s reports.
SIT findings expose scale of phone tapping case
Officials are reviewing findings from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and seeking legal advice before handing over the case to the CBI. The SIT is probing how a special wing in the previous BRS government conducted illegal surveillance on political and administrative figures.
During the BRS term, a unit called Special Operation Targets was set up within the Special Intelligence Branch. This wing, led by then SIB chief Prabhakar Rao and former Additional SP Praneetha, allegedly tapped phones without legal clearance.
Investigators claim the surveillance targeted high-level individuals. These included Tripura’s current governor, former Haryana governor Bandaru Dattatreya, central ministers, top IAS and IPS officials, and the personal assistant of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The SIT has reportedly collected recordings from the election period. It has also recorded statements from BJP leaders, including Bandi Sanjay. Officials say the team gave false data to TRAI, raising concerns over national security.
