Hyderabad: Responding to rising complaints of excessive academic pressure, the Telangana State Women’s Commission directed the Intermediate Board to ensure private junior colleges declare holidays on Vinayaka Chavithi, Sundays, and other festival days.
The directive came after students and parents alleged that some private colleges continued classes even on government-declared holidays.
Complaints over pressure in private colleges
Students said a few colleges ignored the holiday declared for Vinayaka Chavithi and held classes. They complained that such continuous schedules left them mentally and physically exhausted. Parents added that the lack of rest was already affecting students’ concentration and mental health.
Women’s Commission steps in
Chairperson Nerella Sharada instructed the Board of Intermediate Education to monitor holiday compliance strictly. She warned that colleges must not deprive students of rest days, as nonstop classes place an unfair burden on them.
“The lack of holidays is creating unnecessary stress. Colleges must follow declared breaks, which are vital for students’ overall development and mental health,” the Commission stated.
A move for student well-being
The Commission emphasised that rest days are as important as classroom hours. It said breaks allow students to relax and return to studies with better focus and energy.
Officials added that stricter action could follow if private colleges continue to ignore the guidelines.
