Hyderabad: A 19-year-old youth murdered his father in Hyderabad after losing ₹2.5 lakh to online betting apps. Police identified the accused as Ravinder and arrested him on Tuesday for killing his father, Hanumanthu (37), a daily wage mason.
The family came from Kothulakunta Tanda in Ghanpur mandal of Wanaparthy district and later migrated to NTR Nagar in Gachibowli. Hanumanthu supported his wife and two sons by working as a mason. Ravinder, who had completed intermediate studies, remained unemployed and addicted to betting. He often borrowed money to fund his habit.
To pay for his younger son Santosh’s education, Hanumanthu mortgaged land in his village and raised ₹6 lakh. Ravinder persuaded him to deposit ₹2.5 lakh in his account, claiming it would be safe. He then lost the entire amount through a betting app.

Hanumanthu repeatedly demanded the money back, but Ravinder evaded him with excuses. Frequent quarrels deepened their rift, and Ravinder grew resentful. On Tuesday afternoon, after another confrontation, he lured his father to a deserted spot near NTR Nagar, saying a friend would return borrowed money.
Ravinder blindfolded his father under the pretext of a surprise. He then pulled out a knife and slit Hanumanthu’s throat. The father died on the spot. Police arrived soon after receiving an alert and arrested Ravinder. They have launched a detailed investigation.
