Telangana’s power demand nears record 16,000 MW

HYDERABAD, February 10: Telangana is experiencing a substantial increase in electricity demand, with consumption levels approaching a record 16,000 megawatts (MW). On Thursday, the state recorded a peak demand of 15,752 MW, marking the highest in its history.

This surge surpasses the previous peak of 15,623 MW recorded on March 8 of the previous year. The early onset of summer-like temperatures has contributed to the heightened power usage, leading to increased consumption across various sectors.

The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) projects that Telangana’s peak power demand will exceed 16,877 MW in the 2024-25 period, with an anticipated annual growth rate of 4 to 6 percent. The CEA also notes that electricity consumption in the state is increasing by approximately 5 percent each year.

In response to the escalating demand, Telangana’s power utilities are implementing measures to ensure a stable and uninterrupted power supply to consumers. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to manage the increased load effectively.

The state government is also focusing on enhancing infrastructure and exploring alternative energy sources to meet the growing energy requirements. Efforts are underway to bolster the power generation capacity and improve the efficiency of the distribution network to cater to the rising demand.
