HYDERABAD, February 11: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) commenced eviction proceedings against leaseholders of the HUDA Commercial Complex in Saroornagar. The action was taken to facilitate repairs on the deteriorating building. However, shopkeepers resisted the eviction, leading to a tense atmosphere in the area.
The HMDA had previously issued notices to the leaseholders, instructing them to vacate the premises to allow for necessary renovations. The shopkeepers, however, refused to comply, citing ongoing legal proceedings in the court. They engaged in heated exchanges with officials, asserting that the matter was sub judice. Officials responded by referencing directives from the High Court mandating the evacuation.
Due to the escalating tensions, a significant police presence was deployed in Saroornagar to maintain order. Authorities, under police protection, are proceeding with efforts to clear the complex.
The HUDA Commercial Complex, constructed in 1981 with 32 shops, was leased to local traders. The lease agreements expired in 2008, but many occupants have continued their operations without vacating the premises. A recent study by the engineering department of Osmania University assessed the building’s condition and recommended immediate repairs due to its dilapidated state. Following this assessment, HMDA issued eviction notices, which led the leaseholders to seek legal recourse in the High Court. In compliance with the court’s suggestions, HMDA reiterated its directive for immediate evacuation.
As the situation develops, authorities remain vigilant to ensure a peaceful resolution to the standoff.
