HYDERABAD: Tensions escalated at Hyderabad Central University (HCU) on Sunday as students protesting against the proposed auction of university land were arrested by the police. The students organized a rally opposing the government’s plan to auction 400 acres of university land, leading to a confrontation with law enforcement officials.
According to reports, the situation intensified when the police intervened to disperse the protesters, resulting in heated exchanges between the students and officers. Several students were taken into custody during the altercation.
Nihad, the General Secretary of the Students’ Union, alleged that the police were effectively kidnapping them. He claimed that JCBs were deployed on the university’s 400 acres to remove trees and rocks without prior notice. When students attempted to approach the university to address the issue, they were met with heavy police presence and subsequent arrests.
The detained students reported being transported to an undisclosed location, expressing concerns about their safety and the lack of transparency regarding their whereabouts. Sources indicate that the arrested students were later moved to the Madhapur police station.
For several days, student unions have been actively protesting against the government’s proposal to auction university land, arguing that such actions undermine the institution’s autonomy and the educational environment.
