HYDERABAD: A summer evening turned tragic in Nagarkurnool district on Thursday when three children drowned while swimming in a village tank. The incident occurred near Peddakothapalli village, where the children had gone to bathe during their school holidays.
The victims were siblings Ganesh Reddy (13) and Rakshita (10), and their friend Shravan Kumar (7). Ganesh and Rakshita, children of Dharma Reddy and Savitha, were studying in Classes 7 and 5 respectively at Saraswati Shishumandir in Bandlaguda, Hyderabad. Shravan, son of Sudhakar and Radha from the same village, was a Class 2 student at the local government primary school.
According to locals, the three children entered the tank on Thursday evening. However, they failed to return, and their clothes were later found on the bund. Suspicion arose when a passerby spotted the unattended clothes and alerted Rajesh, Shravan’s elder brother, who was nearby herding cattle.
With the help of local farmers, the villagers began a search operation and eventually retrieved the bodies of the children. The deceased were taken to the Nagarkurnool government hospital for post-mortem examination.
The tragic sight of the lifeless children deeply moved the villagers, many of whom were seen in tears. The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the entire community, raising concerns about the safety of unattended water bodies during school vacations.
