Hyderabad: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president and MLC Mahesh Kumar Goud on Monday urged Governor Jishnu Dev Verma to approve the bill raising BC reservations in local body polls to 42 percent.
Call for Governor’s assent
Speaking to the media after an all-party delegation met the Governor at Raj Bhavan, Goud said the Assembly had cleared an amendment lifting the 50 percent quota ceiling. He stressed that the change would allow greater representation for backward classes.
Backed by caste survey findings
Goud explained that the law was based on the caste survey, which showed BCs form 56.33 percent of Telangana’s population. He pointed out that BC associations had long pressed for 42 percent reservations in local bodies. The government, he said, had finally acted on that demand.
All-party support
Goud added that leaders from all parties urged the Governor to give assent. He said the request reflected the survey’s findings and the unanimous stand of the Assembly.
