Hyderabad: Two women on their way to a MGNREGS worksite were mowed down by a speeding car near Akbarpet in Siddipet district on Monday morning. Both died on the spot.
The victims Bagari Chandravva (50) and Gopa Devamma (51), residents of Pothareddypet in Bhumpally mandal had left home early for employment guarantee scheme work when the car struck them on the roadside.
Following the accident, local residents staged a spontaneous protest on the Medak–Siddipet national highway, blocking traffic for nearly two kilometres. The jam continued for hours until police intervened.
Officers who reached the scene took the car driver into custody. The bodies were shifted to a government hospital for post-mortem. A case has been registered and investigation is underway.
Reacting to the incident, Dalit Bahujan Front (DBF) national general secretary Peddalingannagari Shankar demanded financial support for the victims’ families from the state government. He called for the implementation of an insurance scheme for MGNREGS workers and urged the Siddipet district collector to provide ₹50,000 each for the funeral expenses.
