Hyderabad: The University Grants Commission (UGC) reported that it received 3,522 complaints of caste-based discrimination in higher educational institutions across India. The disclosure came in response to a Supreme Court query on January 3.
The Supreme Court had asked the UGC to submit the number of caste discrimination complaints in universities. In reply, the UGC said it actively monitors such cases and does not leave any complaint unresolved.
UGC caste discrimination complaints tracked through helpline
The commission told the court that it created a dedicated helpline to address grievances related to discrimination. UGC added that it is taking strict steps to curb unfair practices in universities and to ensure timely redressal of complaints.
The case highlights the judiciary’s focus on institutional accountability and social equity in India’s higher education sector.
