HYDERABAD, February 5: Passengers at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad have raised concerns over unauthorised taxi drivers operating within the airport premises. These drivers are reportedly demanding exorbitant fares and taking passengers on longer routes, causing significant inconvenience.
Many travellers have shared their experiences on social media, highlighting instances where unauthorised cab drivers approached them, especially during late-night hours. One user recounted being overcharged after being misled about the availability of app-based cabs.
There are also reports of a local taxi mafia interfering with app-based services like Ola and Uber. These individuals allegedly prevent authorised drivers from accessing designated pickup zones, misleading passengers into believing that no app-based cabs are available and charging inflated prices.
In response to these issues, RGIA officials have stated that the safety and convenience of passengers are top priorities. The airport offers authorised transport options, including radio taxis like Meru and Skycabs, app-based services such as Ola and Uber, Rapido, prepaid taxis, car rentals, and Pushpak buses. To combat unauthorised operators, over 31 anti-touting security personnel have been deployed at key locations, and a special patrol team has been introduced in collaboration with the Telangana Police.
In 2024, 446 cases of touting were reported to the RGIA Police Station and Interception teams. Authorities urge passengers to verify the authenticity of cabs and drivers before boarding and to report any suspicious activity to airport officials or the police.
As of now, there has been no official response from the state government regarding the protest or the demands of the former sarpanchs.
