Hyderabad: Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Wednesday directed officials across Telangana to speed up flood safety measures. He stressed that saving lives and property must be the top priority during the ongoing heavy rainfall.
At a press meet held at Gandhi Bhavan, the minister said the government was taking all possible steps to prevent breaches in reservoirs, canals, and minor irrigation tanks. He called for tight coordination between irrigation staff, district Collectors, and other departments. Round-the-clock monitoring and rapid response are essential, he added.
Flood safety Telangana: Minister demands urgency, local readiness, and sandbagging
“All irrigation officials must be present in the field and use financial powers under GO 45 to act fast,” he said. He especially urged officers in Kamareddy and Medak to stay alert. Officials must place sandbags in weak zones and alert farmers in low-lying ayacut areas.
In a video call with officials, the minister reviewed rainfall data and reservoir inflows. At Nizam Sagar, the flow reached 1.52 lakh cusecs. He ordered real-time updates from dams like Sripada Yellampalli, Mid Manair, and Mallanna Sagar. He also stressed that uninterrupted power is needed to keep pumps running at full capacity.
The minister instructed teams to fill MI tanks where possible and prepare control rooms for any emergency. He said all teams must be ready with material and manpower to respond without delay.
He directed Engineer-in-Chief Amjed Ullah to inspect sites daily and report online and in person. “Treat flood safety as an emergency task. Officers must act fast and stay responsible,” he said.
