DELHI: The controversial Waqf Amendment Bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday afternoon. Union Law and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju presented the bill in the Upper House, initiating a debate that will be followed by a vote.
To secure passage in the Rajya Sabha, the bill requires the support of at least 119 members. While the BJP holds 98 MPs on its own, it commands a total of 125 votes with the backing of its allies, giving it a numerical edge.
The bill had already cleared the Lok Sabha, where it was introduced by Minister Rijiju at noon on Wednesday. The debate continued for 12 hours, lasting until midnight, after which a vote was held. The bill was passed around 2 a.m. with 282 votes in favour and 232 against.
