Hyderabad: A 28-year-old youth drowned while fishing near a lake in the Shamirpet area on Monday afternoon, in a tragic incident that shocked residents of Jawaharnagar.
The deceased, Vallapu Hanumayya, had gone to the Nallakunta lake canal with a group of friends to catch fish. The canal is located beside a double-bedroom housing project in Thumkunta municipality, under the jurisdiction of Shamirpet police station. According to officials, Hanumayya accidentally slipped into deep water and drowned before his friends could rescue him.
Shamirpet police reached the spot shortly after being alerted and retrieved the body with the help of locals. Hanumayya was a daily wage worker and resident of Jawaharnagar. He had reportedly gone fishing for recreation on his day off.
His brother, Shivakumar, lodged a formal complaint following the incident. Based on the report, police registered a case and initiated an investigation to rule out any foul play. The body was sent for post-mortem examination at Gandhi Hospital.
Locals expressed concern over the lack of safety measures and fencing near the lake canal, which attracts youths and fishermen regularly. Residents have urged municipal officials to install warning signs and restrict access to unsafe water zones.
Police have appealed to the public to avoid entering unmonitored water bodies during the monsoon season, citing multiple similar incidents in recent years.
