Hyderabad: Minister for Forest, Environment & Endowments Konda Surekha on Wednesday expressed pride in wearing the Indiramma Saree, calling it a symbol of dignity for women and a reflection of the Telangana government’s commitment to quality and empowerment.
She made the remarks after participating in the official launch of the Indiramma Saree distribution programme on the occasion of Indira Gandhi Jayanti. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy inaugurated the event, which aims to provide one crore high-quality sarees to women across the state.
One crore Indiramma Sarees to be distributed in two phases
Surekha said the government had learned from past mistakes and is ensuring only high-quality sarees are distributed this time. She criticised the previous government for supplying poor-quality fabric that, in her words, “brought shame to a noble programme.”
The scheme is being rolled out in two stages. In the first phase, from now until December 9 (Telangana Thalli Day), sarees will go to women in rural areas. The second phase will cover urban women from March 1, 2026. In total, 65 lakh sarees will be given out in the first phase and 35 lakh in the second.
The Minister also noted that Sirisilla weavers are producing all the sarees. Due to the time-intensive nature of handloom weaving, the government opted for a phased distribution. She emphasized that the state would not compromise on quality under any circumstances.
Surekha reaffirmed that every eligible woman in Telangana will receive a saree that reflects both dignity and the spirit of Indira Gandhi, whom the scheme honours.
