Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Monday declared that Achampet Assembly constituency would be turned into a model for India through a complete switchover to solar-powered irrigation. Within 100 days, all electric pump sets in the region would be replaced with solar pump sets, he said.
Revanth Reddy made the announcement while launching the Indira Soura Giri Jala Vikasam scheme at Macharam village, Amrabad Mandal, Nagarkurnool district, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka and other ministers. The scheme aims to convert forest podu lands into cultivable terrain using solar-based irrigation.
Addressing the beneficiaries, Revanth Reddy assured that farmers wouldn’t pay a single rupee for the new systems. The state government would bear the full cost, supplying 5 HP and 7.5 HP solar pump sets free of charge. Officials have been instructed to design solar panels in a way that generates surplus power after meeting irrigation needs, ensuring farmers earn an additional monthly income between ₹3,000 and ₹5,000.
The excess power generated will be bought by the government, and proceeds from these purchases will be credited monthly into the accounts of women farmers, the Chief Minister said. Revanth Reddy also promised to sanction Indiramma housing units for Chenchu tribal families in the constituency within ten days.
He urged beneficiaries to safeguard their solar systems and help train other farmers by participating in awareness programmes. Citing the difficulties of laying power lines in the Nallamala forests, Revanth Reddy said solar energy now brings electricity directly to the doorstep.
