Hyderabad: Telangana Minister Ponnam Prabhakar accused BJP state president G. Ramachandra Rao of misleading farmers with false claims over urea supply, amid ongoing issues tied to the AP fertilizer scam and centre-state supply gaps.
Responding to Rao’s assertion that 12.02 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of urea had already been supplied to Telangana this year, the minister presented official month-wise figures showing a 2.25 LMT shortfall between April and July. He said only 4.35 LMT of urea was received against a planned 6.60 LMT for the period.
April 2025: Planned 1.70 LMT, received 1.21 LMT (29% short)
May 2025: Planned 1.60 LMT, received 0.88 LMT (45% short)
June 2025: Planned 1.70 LMT, received 0.98 LMT (42% short)
July 2025: Planned 1.60 LMT, received 1.28 LMT (20% short)
Prabhakar said the BJP chief was speaking without understanding how fertilizers are allocated or supplied to states. “He doesn’t know the difference between production and allocation. State needs are met through central dispatches, not state manufacturing,” he said.
He added that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao had repeatedly requested the Centre to meet Telangana’s full urea requirement of 9.80 LMT, citing routine daily sales of 10,000–13,000 MT.
On July 8, CM Reddy reportedly raised the matter with the Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers. Rao had also submitted multiple representations over the widening supply-demand gap.
Calling BJP’s local leadership “ignorant of agriculture,” Prabhakar challenged them to work with the Centre to resolve supply issues instead of blaming the state government. He said that despite constraints, the Telangana government was ensuring seamless distribution under the leadership of CM Revanth Reddy.
