Centre finalises agenda for CM-level Krishna-Godavari water talks

Hyderabad: The Union Jal Shakti Ministry on Tuesday evening dispatched the official agenda to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for Wednesday’s chief minister-level meeting on Krishna-Godavari river water issues.

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy held consultations with irrigation and CMO officials and engineers from the inter-state water resources wing to prepare their strategy.

Key agenda items include Andhra Pradesh’s Godavari–Banakacharla proposal and Telangana’s pending clearances for the Palamuru–Rangareddy and Dindi lift schemes. The Centre is also expected to advise AP to halt the diversion of water from Srisailam’s lower levels to another basin.

The agenda outlines pressure on AP to approve Telangana’s arguments before the Krishna Tribunal-II and to cooperate in allowing Telangana to use water from joint projects. It also stresses the need for unbiased determination of basin needs and impartial handling of inter-basin diversions, alongside early completion of telemetry systems.

Other items include Tungabhadra diversions, multiple issues related to Srisailam, and ensuring AP’s compliance with NGT directives on the Rayalaseema lift scheme, including routing clearances through the environment ministry.

The agenda also proposes stopping AP from expanding the capacity of the Srisailam Right Main Canal, initiating the Godavari–Ichampally–Cauvery linkage with 148 TMC water transfers, and permitting Telangana to use 200 TMC floodwater from Ichampally.

The Centre is further expected to mediate with Chhattisgarh to resolve the Sammakka Sagar issue and facilitate an agreement with Maharashtra for the Tummidihatti barrage under the Pranahita–Chevella project, backed by AIBP funding.
