Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Monday directed officials to ensure strict monitoring of LED streetlights across Telangana. He said all villages must install required lights and give sarpanches responsibility for their maintenance.
Revanth Reddy LED streetlights directive to officials
The Chief Minister held a review with Panchayat Raj, Municipal and GHMC departments at the Integrated Command Control Centre. He asked officials to survey every pole, check existing streetlights and calculate additional requirements.
He said lights must function at night but not remain on during the day. Mandal-level MPDOs must monitor dashboards, while additional collectors should oversee district-level supervision.
Officials informed him that Telangana had 16.16 lakh LED lights. In four districts, agencies currently manage the contracts. Revanth Reddy said handing over control to sarpanches would improve upkeep and reduce misuse.
He ordered that all streetlights link with the Hyderabad Command Control Centre. GHMC alone maintains 5.5 lakh lights, while the city requires 7.5 lakh in total. He said tendering must consider core urban areas, including new corporations, municipalities and extended villages.
The CM directed officials to invite reputed companies for supply and assign them seven-year maintenance contracts. He asked for strict tender norms and a system to track performance, including third-party audits by institutes such as IIT Hyderabad.
Revanth Reddy also asked departments to study solar power as an option. GHMC pays nearly ₹8 crore monthly for streetlight electricity, he said, making alternatives necessary.
CM advisor Vem Narender Reddy, along with senior officials of Panchayat Raj, Municipal Administration and GHMC, attended the meeting.
