Hyderabad: The Congress party has launched its ‘Social Justice 2.0’ campaign in Telangana, marking a renewed push for equity, representation, and structural reform for SC, ST, OBC, and EWS communities.
Led by Rahul Gandhi, the movement highlights the chronic under-representation of backward communities in India’s judiciary, corporate sector, civil services, and academic institutions.
Citing a Parliamentary reply that confirms 80% of OBC and 83% of ST faculty positions in central universities remain vacant, party leaders stressed the urgency of systemic corrections.
The Congress has long demanded a nationwide caste census and removal of the Supreme Court-imposed 50% reservation cap. While the central government has agreed to conduct a caste survey, it has not addressed the cap issue.
Telangana has emerged as a model for scientific socio-economic data collection. Based on its caste survey, the state government has recommended 42% reservations for OBCs in education and local body elections. The corresponding bill is currently awaiting the assent of the President of India.
The Congress thanked the Independent Expert Working Group led by former Supreme Court judge Justice B. Sudarshan Reddy, TPCC leadership, the Chief Minister, Deputy CM, ministers, and MPs for their role in executing this initiative.
