CPI veteran Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy passes away at 83 in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Senior CPI leader and former Member of Parliament Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy passed away on Friday night at the age of 83. He had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Gachibowli, Hyderabad. Born on March 25, 1942, in Kondrapualli village of Mahbubnagar district, Sudhakar Reddy served as Nalgonda MP twice and was CPI’s national general secretary from 2012 to 2019.

A lifelong communist, his political journey began with the All India Students’ Federation (AISF) and extended to the highest levels of CPI leadership. His father, Venkatarami Reddy, was a freedom fighter who participated in the Telangana Armed Struggle.

Sudhakar Reddy was married to Vijayalakshmi in 1974 and had two sons, one of whom, Nikhil, resides in the US. His mortal remains will be kept at the CPI office in Himayatnagar from 10 AM to 3 PM on Sunday for public homage. Thereafter, his body will be donated to Gandhi Hospital, in accordance with his family’s wishes.

His political activism began in 1957 during his student days in Kurnool and intensified in the 1960s. He held several key positions including AISF National Secretary (1966), AIYF President (1972), and became a CPI National Executive Member in 1971. He contested unsuccessfully from Kollapur and Don in the 1980s and 1990s before winning Lok Sabha elections from Nalgonda in 1998 and 2004.

As an MP, he chaired the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour and played a major role in leftist agitations, including protests against power tariff hikes in 2000. He was elected as CPI’s deputy general secretary in 2007 and became general secretary in 2012, succeeding A.B. Bardhan. He was the second Telugu leader to hold that post after Chandra Rajeshwara Rao.

Leaders across the political spectrum including Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka, Ministers N Uttam Kumar Reddy, TPCC President Mahesh Kumar Goud, Government Advisor Mohammed Ali Shabbir, BRS Chief K. Chandrashekar Rao, and Working President K.T. Rama Rao expressed their condolences.
