Emaar Properties has urged the Telangana government to resolve long-pending disputes related to its projects. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has directed a legal review and the formation of an expert committee to assess the cases.
HYDERABAD: Emaar Properties has approached the Telangana government seeking resolution of long-pending legal disputes related to its projects in the state. Representatives from the Dubai-based real estate firm met Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Industries Minister Sridhar Babu at the Secretariat, requesting the government’s intervention in settling the issues.
Background of Emaar’s Disputes
In 2001, Emaar Properties entered into agreements with the then united Andhra Pradesh government to develop key projects in Hyderabad, including a convention center, a hotel, a golf course, and luxury villas. However, allegations of irregularities in its agreements with the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) led to investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Several cases related to these issues remain under investigation and court proceedings are ongoing.
Following the formation of Telangana, the government set up a committee in October 2015 headed by the Chief Secretary and comprising five senior secretaries to address disputes related to Emaar Properties. The Union Ministry of External Affairs and the Solicitor General of India also provided recommendations to the Telangana government regarding the issue.
CM Revanth Reddy Orders Legal Review and New Expert Committee
During the recent discussions with Emaar representatives, officials briefed Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on the legal aspects, pending investigations, and the status of court cases. Given the complexity of the issue, the Chief Minister directed officials to conduct a thorough review of all agreements, legal proceedings, and recommendations from the central government before making any decisions.
In addition to the 2015 committee, Revanth Reddy instructed the formation of a new legal committee comprising expert advisors to further analyze the legal challenges surrounding Emaar’s projects.
Emaar representatives proposed setting up a legal agency, with approval from the UAE government, to facilitate an amicable resolution of the disputes. The Chief Minister approved this proposal, stating that the Telangana government’s newly formed committee would engage with the legal agency to provide further recommendations on the matter.
Key Officials and Representatives Present
Emaar Properties’ delegation was led by Founder and Managing Director Mohamed Alabbar, along with former UAE Ambassador to India Dr. Ahmed Al Banna, Emaar Group CEO Amit Jain, and Head of International Affairs Mustafa Akram.
Senior Telangana government officials, including Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari, Advocate General Sudarshan Reddy, Special Chief Secretary for Industries Jayesh Ranjan, Special Chief Secretary for Finance Ramakrishna Rao, CMO Principal Secretary Sheshadri, CM’s Special Secretary Ajit Reddy, TSIIC MD Vishnu Vardhan Reddy, and Law Secretary Tirupati, were also present at the meeting.
