HYDERABAD: Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka on Monday directed officials to withdraw the cases filed against students of the University of Hyderabad (HCU) who were involved in a protest during land levelling activity in Kanch Gachibowli.
The incident occurred on March 30 around 3:30 PM near the university’s East Campus, where levelling work was underway on a 400-acre tract. According to reports, outsiders entered the area and attacked both police personnel and workers present at the site. Madhapur ACP Srikanth sustained injuries in the scuffle.
Police Detain 53, Arrest Two
Following the disturbance, Gachibowli police detained 53 individuals, including HCU students, later releasing them on personal bonds. Based on a complaint filed by Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC) officials, police arrested two individuals — Rohith and Naveen Kumar — and sent them to judicial remand. Officers stated that neither of the two had any connection to the university but had entered the premises and incited unrest.
Police Deny Excesses
Authorities refuted allegations that students were subjected to lathi charge or forcibly removed from hostels, calling such reports baseless. Police reiterated their earlier warning to students not to fall into the trap of external elements and assured that strict action would be taken against anyone disturbing public order.
Deputy CM Bhatti’s directive to drop the cases is seen as a conciliatory move amid mounting student concerns over land issues and campus safety.
