Heavy rains lash Telangana, Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar gates opened

Hyderabad: Heavy rains in Telangana since Thursday night disrupted normal life, with several districts facing flooding, damaged roads, and traffic snarls. Triggered by a weather system over the Bay of Bengal, the downpour continued into Friday morning and inundated towns and villages.

Hanamkonda saw overflowing tanks, while waterlogging on National Highway 163 in Katakshapur, Atmakur mandal, created a two-kilometre traffic jam. Because of potholes, vehicles could move only on one side. Meanwhile, Medak also reported paralysis of daily life, with 13 cm of rainfall recorded in just a few hours.

Several districts including Nirmal, Nizamabad, Suryapet, Hyderabad, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Kamareddy, Mahbubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Narayanpet, Wanaparthy, Gadwal, Medchal–Malkajgiri, Jagtial, Karimnagar and Mahbubabad received heavy showers. In Siddipet’s Damat, 15.3 cm of rainfall fell, while Yacharam in Ranga Reddy topped the list with 18 cm. Consequently, reservoirs in Mulugu and Yadadri also recorded high inflows.

Heavy rains in Telangana prompt flood alerts and evacuations

Authorities opened gates of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar to release excess water into the Musi river. At 9 a.m., Osman Sagar’s level reached 1789.50 ft against a full level of 1790 ft. With 2,300 cusecs entering, officials discharged 2,028 cusecs through six gates. At Himayat Sagar, the level rose to 1762.20 ft, close to its full mark of 1763.50 ft. Therefore, staff released 5,215 cusecs through three gates to manage an inflow of 5,500 cusecs.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board issued a flood warning to people living along the Musi. Rising water reached Moosi Rambagh bridge and began flowing over it, so police closed the bridge to traffic. Meanwhile, Cyberabad traffic police diverted vehicles at Exit 17 and other junctions, urging commuters to cooperate with the diversions.

Elsewhere, roads in Yadadri–Bhongir remained blocked because floodwater submerged a low-level bridge at Nagi Reddy Pally. In Karimnagar’s Syedapur and Bommakal areas, schools and hostels reported waterlogging. Students at Somaram model school hostel waded through knee-deep water. Farmers in Venukapally also struggled to access fields as Tamla tank swelled rapidly.

The Meteorological Department predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Nirmal, Nizamabad, Sangareddy, Medak and Kamareddy on Saturday, placing them under orange alert. It also issued yellow alerts for multiple districts, warning of thunderstorms, lightning and winds up to 40 kmph. Furthermore, the department said Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad and other northern districts could see heavy rains on Sunday and Monday.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy directed all departments to remain on high alert. He ordered evacuation of residents from dilapidated houses and told GHMC, SDRF, fire services, traffic and police to conduct coordinated rescue operations. Consequently, agencies have started preparing equipment and staff to handle emergencies.
