Hyderabad: A 22-year-old youth from Balanagar died by suicide after falling into heavy debt due to his addiction to online gaming and betting apps. The incident took place late on Tuesday night, sending shock waves through the local community.
Youth addicted to online betting found dead at home
The victim, V. Ashish, was the younger son of Vangari Srinivas, a businessman from Poolbhag Colony. Police said Ashish had dropped out of a degree course midway and was learning computer skills at a private institute. Over the past few years, he became addicted to online games and betting, eventually incurring debts of nearly ₹2 lakh.
His father had cleared the debts earlier and warned him not to return to online gambling, advising him to focus on studies. However, Ashish continued to play secretly.
On Tuesday, Ashish accompanied his parents to a relative’s house in Nagole but returned home before them. When his parents came back late at night, they found him hanging from the ceiling fan in his bedroom.
They rushed him to a nearby private hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Suicide note found in parents’ bedroom
Police recovered a suicide note from the parents’ bedroom. Based on a complaint from his father, Balanagar police registered a case on Wednesday and began an investigation.
Officials said excessive online gaming and betting are leading to growing cases of financial distress and youth suicides across the city.
