HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has made a major breakthrough in restoring Bathukamma Kunta, a historic lake in Amberpet. During excavation work that began in November 2024, workers found water just four feet below the surface. This discovery has raised hopes for the lake’s revival.
A Step Toward Restoration
Historical records from 1962-63 show that Bathukamma Kunta once covered 14.06 acres. However, years of encroachments and neglect shrank it to just 5.15 acres. To reverse this damage, HYDRAA launched an excavation project to clear debris and restore the lake’s original capacity.
Commissioner A.V. Ranganath expressed optimism, calling the water discovery a promising sign for rejuvenation. He emphasized that this finding strengthens the agency’s commitment to fully restoring the lake.
Community Advocacy and Ongoing Efforts
Local residents have long fought to preserve Bathukamma Kunta. Senior Congress leader V. Hanumantha Rao has been vocal in urging the government to prevent further encroachments. In 2014, he led protests highlighting the lake’s deterioration and the urgent need for action.
The latest discovery has uplifted community morale. Many locals have joined cleanup drives and support HYDRAA’s initiatives. With strong public backing, the agency plans to continue excavation and restoration.
This progress underscores the importance of community involvement and sustained advocacy in protecting urban water bodies. Preserving these lakes is essential for maintaining ecological balance and honoring local traditions.
