Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao praised the craftsmanship and endurance of Telangana weavers on National Handloom Day, crediting targeted welfare schemes for reviving the once-struggling sector.
Speaking on Thursday, Rama Rao highlighted the transformation of the weaving community under BRS leadership. He said handloom artisans who had migrated to Surat and Bhiwandi due to lack of support returned after initiatives like Chenetha Mitra, Netannaku Cheyutha, Netanna Bima, Bathukamma Sarees, loan waivers, and pensions were introduced.
Telangana weavers lauded for resilience and revival
Rama Rao recalled the dire state of weavers in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, blaming the Congress government for the destruction of traditional looms. He credited former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao with leading the sector’s revival through sustained support and reform.
“Our weavers can create miracles with their looms,” he said. “They can weave sarees that fit into a matchbox. They have turned nerves into yarn, blood into colours, sweat into sarees, and eventually, introduced civilisation to humankind.”
