Hyderabad: Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka welcomed the Supreme Court’s dismissal of a petition challenging Telangana’s order that grants 42% reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in local body elections. He called the ruling a victory for social justice.
Speaking in Delhi, Bhatti Vikramarka said the Telangana Assembly had approved the BC quota policy after detailed discussion. “The Supreme Court’s decision supports our stand,” he said. “Some people tried to block BC reservations, but the verdict shows our action is legal.” He added that the government will implement the quota in upcoming local polls.
Supreme Court rejects plea on Telangana BC quota, directs petitioners to High Court
Earlier, the Supreme Court questioned why the petitioners approached it while the same issue was pending before the Telangana High Court. When the petitioner’s lawyer said the High Court had refused a stay, Justice Vikram Nath asked, “If the High Court doesn’t grant a stay, will you come here?”
The bench advised the petitioners to move the Telangana High Court instead. It then closed the case. The decision confirmed the High Court’s authority on the matter and gave the Telangana government legal relief.
