Hyderabad: Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar and Legislative Council Chairman Gutta Sukhender Reddy led the 79th Independence Day celebrations at their respective premises on Thursday, unfurling the national flag in the presence of legislators, senior officials, and staff.
The Assembly lawns saw MLAs, Legislature Secretary Dr. Narasimha Charyulu, and employees from various departments join the event. At the Council premises, MLCs, senior staff, and officials from the Chairman’s office gathered for the ceremony. Both leaders exchanged greetings with attendees, creating a festive and respectful atmosphere.
Leaders pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and freedom fighters
Following the flag hoisting, the Speaker and Chairman walked to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi within the legislature complex. They placed floral garlands at the base of the statue and stood in silence as a mark of respect. Both leaders recalled the sacrifices of Gandhi and countless freedom fighters who struggled for India’s independence.
Speaking briefly to the gathering, Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar said Independence Day was a reminder to uphold democratic values and work for the welfare of the people. Legislative Council Chairman Gutta Sukhender Reddy echoed the sentiment, calling on public representatives to lead by example and ensure that the benefits of development reach every citizen.
Officials noted that the Independence Day ceremony in the legislature complex is a longstanding tradition, symbolising the unity of both Houses in their service to the state. Cultural performances by staff members and patriotic songs played by the police band added to the celebratory spirit.
The event concluded with the distribution of sweets to attendees, reinforcing the message of harmony and collective responsibility in building a stronger Telangana.
