Telangana to see assembly seat reorganisation after 2025 census

Telangana assembly seat reorganisation

Hyderabad: Telangana is expected to undergo a major legislative boundary reshuffle after the completion of the upcoming national census, with the number of assembly seats likely to increase from 119 to around 153. Officials have informed state Chief Secretaries to submit official lists of villages, mandals, municipalities, and districts by December 31, 2025, which will form the basis for delimitation.

The new boundaries will be determined based on average population per constituency. For example, if the state’s population is recorded at 4 crore in 2027, each assembly segment will represent roughly 2.61 lakh people, allowing for a ±10% variation. As in previous exercises, the district will be treated as the basic unit for seat formation.

Telangana assembly seat reorganisation may remove cross-district segments

Currently, over 30 constituencies in Telangana have mandals spread across two or more districts—such as Kodangal, Palakurthi, and Husnabad (in three districts), and Bhopalpally, Parkal, Kalwakurthy, Jangaon, Gajwel, and Huzurabad (in two). Under the new plan, all constituencies will be confined within single districts to streamline administration.

Sources also suggest the possibility of new constituencies being created in districts like Mulugu, Medak, and Wanaparthy. However, the Centre has clarified that only existing boundaries as of December 31, 2025, will be considered. Any new districts or mandals formed afterward will be excluded from the census framework.

State officials acknowledge that altering district borders before that date may prove challenging, as it could impact Zilla Parishad elections, zonal job recruitment systems, and reservation structures. Politically, the matter is gaining sensitivity, as parties prepare for the eventual shift in electoral maps.

Meanwhile, in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has already initiated administrative boundary restructuring ahead of its own delimitation process, aiming to align assembly segments with updated district configurations.
