Hyderabad: The Telangana Cabinet has approved an ordinance to remove the two-child rule for contesting local body elections. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy chaired the meeting at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Telangana Secretariat.
The Cabinet decided to delete Section 21(3) of the Telangana Panchayat Raj Act, 2018. This section barred people with more than two children from contesting local elections. The change aims to increase electoral participation in both urban and rural areas.
The Cabinet also reviewed the progress of the SLBC tunnel project in undivided Nalgonda. It set a deadline of late 2026 or early 2027 for completion. So far, 35 km of the 44-km tunnel is done. The same agency will complete the rest using modern drilling methods instead of tunnel boring machines.
On BC reservations, the Cabinet reaffirmed its commitment to provide 42% quota in local bodies. However, it said any final decision would depend on the High Court’s judgment.
Healthcare infrastructure was also discussed. The Cabinet ordered the quick completion of super-specialty hospitals in LB Nagar, Sanathnagar, Alwal, and Warangal.
It approved a plan to install 1,500 MW of battery energy storage across the state. It also cleared the removal of the 62.5 MW RTS-B thermal unit at Ramagundam, which has been in service for 52 years.
The power department must now create a long-term energy plan. The plan should align with demand projections for the next ten years.
Ministers Jupally Krishna Rao, Konda Surekha, Ponnam Prabhakar, V. Srinivas Goud, and information minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy shared these updates during a press briefing.
