Hyderabad: The Telangana Legislative Council witnessed uproar on Monday after Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced that the Kaleshwaram project report would be handed over to the CBI.
BRS stages protest in Council
BRS MLCs strongly opposed the move and staged protests, squatting in front of the Chairman’s podium. They gave slogans like “Bade bhai-Chote bhai ek hai… Kaleshwaram report fake hai” and “Rahul opposes CBI, but Revanth loves it,” bringing the House to a grinding halt. Members of the ruling Congress countered with slogans of their own, leading to heated scenes.
Chairman Gutta Sukhender Reddy repeatedly appealed to members to return to their seats, but the BRS legislators refused, prompting his displeasure.
Ministers defend BC reservations bill
During the protest, Minister Ponnam Prabhakar intervened, accusing BRS leaders of double standards, saying they had not participated in the comprehensive survey yet were making baseless allegations.
Despite the uproar, the Council approved the BC Reservation Bill, enhancing quotas in local bodies to 42 percent, without any discussion.
Other bills passed
The House also unanimously cleared several other bills, including the Panchayat Raj Amendment Bill introduced by Minister Seethakka for new municipalities in Indresam and Jinnaram and expansion of Isnapur municipality in Sangareddy district. Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha’s Allopathic Bill was also passed.
Following the business, Chairman Gutta Sukhender Reddy adjourned the House indefinitely.
