Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Saturday lifted the quota ceiling and approved 42 percent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local body elections.
Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy announced the decision after a cabinet meeting at the Secretariat. He said the government would table the reservation bills in the Assembly on Sunday. The bills were earlier sent to the Governor through an Ordinance. The state has already written to the Election Commission to hold the polls in September.

The cabinet also approved the formation of a Goshala Welfare Board. It nominated Professor Kodandaram and former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin as MLCs under the Governor’s quota.
On agriculture, Srinivas Reddy said the government would probe irregularities in the 2022–23 Rabi grain procurement. He warned that the Preventive Detention (PD) Act could be invoked if needed. The minister also said he would meet officials on Monday to assess crop losses caused by recent rains and promised relief to affected farmers.
“Several lives and properties were lost due to heavy rains. The Chief Minister will review a detailed report,” he said. The cabinet also cleared the purchase of machinery and equipment from the National Hydrology Technology project.
