Hyderabad: Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka said the Telangana government will strongly defend the 42% OBC reservations in the Supreme Court. He added that the state has solid legal grounds and verified data to justify the decision. Meanwhile, a writ petition in the apex court questioned the quota for exceeding the 50% limit. The bench will hear the case today.
Earlier, Bhatti Vikramarka led a high-level meeting at Telangana Bhavan in Delhi. Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Vakati Srihari, Advocate Shravan Kumar, BC Welfare Secretary Jyothi Buddha Prakash, and Coordination Secretary Gaurav Uppal joined him. During the meeting, the team reviewed all legal documents, survey details, and supporting evidence in sequence.
Telangana OBC quota Supreme Court hearing: Bhatti asserts firm government stand
Afterwards, the Deputy CM told reporters that the Assembly had unanimously approved the BC reservation Bill. He also recalled that the Supreme Court, in 1990–91, allowed states to exceed 50% reservations if they had empirical data. Therefore, he said Telangana’s case stands on strong constitutional footing. “We have survey-based proof that no other state gathered,” he added.
Moreover, Bhatti Vikramarka said senior advocates Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Siddharth Dave will represent Telangana in the Supreme Court. He further expressed confidence that the government will win the legal fight. “The Congress government remains committed to enforcing 42% BC reservations in Telangana,” he said firmly.
Finally, he remarked that the case goes beyond legality and represents social justice for millions of OBC citizens. Thus, he reiterated that the state will defend every part of its constitutional responsibility.
