Hyderabad: The Telangana Prisons Department marked Telangana Praja Palana Dhinotsavam on Wednesday with patriotic fervour. The celebration took place at the office of the Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services in Hyderabad. Director General Soumya Mishra, IPS, hoisted the national flag and addressed officers and staff.
Reflecting on the occasion, Mishra recalled the significance of September 17 in Telangana’s history. “India became free on August 15, 1947, but Telangana had to wait until September 17, 1948, to break free from the Nizam’s rule,” she said. According to her, Telangana Praja Palana Dhinotsavam serves as a tribute to the sacrifices made by farmers, students, and workers during the armed struggle that led to Hyderabad’s integration into the Indian Union through Operation Polo.

Mishra emphasised that September 17 marked not only the end of monarchy but also the start of democracy in the region. She stated that the courage and unity displayed by the people transformed the course of history. Therefore, remembering their struggle annually on Telangana Praja Palana Dhinotsavam is essential, she added.
The Director General also shared that the Telangana Prisons Department had secured the Overall Championship at the 7th All India Prison Duty Meet 2025, held recently in Hyderabad. She noted that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy personally congratulated the department. This recognition, she said, reflects the dedication of the state’s prison administration.
Several senior officers, including Y. Rajesh, N. Murali Babu, M. Sampath, and N. Shiva Kumar Goud, attended the event. A large gathering of staff members also participated. The programme concluded with a formal tribute to freedom fighters and a pledge to uphold the values of democracy.
