Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Wednesday launched the “Indiramma Saree” scheme. Under this scheme, one crore sarees will be distributed to women across the state. This is part of the government’s women empowerment drive.
Marking former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s birth anniversary, Reddy said the distribution would occur in two phases. In the first phase, rural women will receive sarees by December 9. The second phase, targeting urban beneficiaries, will take place from March 1 to 8, coinciding with International Women’s Day. Reddy confirmed that 65 lakh sarees will be distributed in the second phase alone.
He urged women ministers and MLAs to wear the Indiramma sarees and act as brand ambassadors. “Every woman legislator should showcase these sarees to reflect the dignity and self-respect of the women’s community,” he said.

The Chief Minister said his government drew inspiration from Indira Gandhi. This inspired them to roll out multiple schemes focused on economic and social upliftment of women. These include allotting petrol outlets to women’s groups and leasing 1,000 TGSRTC buses from self-help groups. Additionally, Indiramma houses are allotted in women’s names. The state has also set a goal of promoting one crore women as millionaires, he noted.
He added that the saree initiative is also a tribute to Indira Gandhi. Reddy recalled her leadership during critical moments in Indian history. He highlighted her contributions such as the nationalisation of banks, land reforms, and pro-poor housing initiatives.
“Indira Gandhi stood firm during the India-Pakistan war and guided the nation through political uncertainty. Her reforms changed India’s future,” he said.
