Hyderabad: In a blistering critique of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) on Tuesday defended his party’s financial record and accused the Congress government of fabricating debt figures to defame the previous administration. Addressing reporters at Telangana Bhavan, KTR alleged that the chief minister was distorting facts and indulging in character assassination rather than governing responsibly.
KTR claimed that the BRS government, over a ten-year period, had accumulated a total debt of ₹4.17 lakh crore, amounting to around ₹40,000 crore annually. “This includes ₹1.15 lakh crore in direct state borrowings. We handed over the state in December 2023 with a monthly revenue of ₹18,000 crore, a substantial rise from ₹4,000 crore a decade earlier,” he said.
He accused Revanth Reddy of misleading the public by quoting arbitrary debt figures that changed every few days. “When they came to power, they claimed the state debt was ₹6 lakh crore. Now they say it’s ₹8.29 lakh crore. Tomorrow, who knows what number they will conjure up? Is this governance or a circus?” KTR asked.
According to KTR, official data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) contradicts the government’s inflated claims. “RBI states Telangana’s monthly debt servicing is only ₹2,000 crore. The total repayable debt till 2032-33, including interest, is projected at ₹1.64 lakh crore, or ₹27,000 crore per year. Our debt-to-GSDP ratio ranks 24th nationally. Even the central government agrees that Telangana’s financial health is stable,” he asserted.
The BRS leader criticised the Congress for prioritising extravagances while neglecting crucial welfare obligations. “You have ₹250 crore for beauty pageants but claim there’s no money for pensions or retirement benefits? Is this your idea of good governance?” KTR questioned, adding that Revanth Reddy’s remarks about government employees had deeply insulted those who fought for Telangana’s formation.
Taking strong exception to the chief minister’s comments, KTR said, “He spoke as if employees are parasites—saying they eat what he cooks. No one in this state is mad enough to feed on your burnt policies. You’re setting fire to the state with your arrogant leadership. People are beginning to ask why schemes like Rythu Bandhu and Aasara pensions are delayed. They remember that electricity supply was better under KCR.”
Slamming Revanth Reddy for turning public servants into villains, KTR reminded that these very employees were instrumental in the Telangana movement. “Telangana statehood came through decades of sacrifice. It was the employees, the youth, the intellectuals, and the leadership of KCR that led to the creation of this state. And now, these heroes are being ridiculed.”
He recalled the BRS government’s commitment to employee welfare: “KCR gave a 73% fitment, special increments, and ensured that Telangana government employees were paid more than their central counterparts. We honoured their sacrifice by offering leadership roles—many became ministers, MLAs, MLCs, and chairpersons.”
KTR accused Revanth Reddy of failing to honour his own election promises. “You said you’d merge RTC workers into the government, clear two PRC arrears, release three pending DAs, implement a new PRC, scrap CPS and restore OPS, and cancel GO 317. What happened? Employees are only asking for what you promised—not the moon.”
The BRS leader questioned the Congress’s credibility, referring to past corruption scandals. “Revanth Reddy was once caught with bundles of cash. Now he claims nobody believes him, and that even he can’t get an appointment. Well, what do you expect? A thief will always be seen as a thief.”
He also held Rahul Gandhi responsible for backing Revanth Reddy despite his record. “Three years ago, Rahul Gandhi promised a farmer declaration in Warangal—₹2 lakh loan waivers, ₹15,000 Rythu Bandhu payouts, support for tenant farmers and agricultural workers. What became of those assurances?”
KTR painted a bleak picture of Congress governance, saying the party had pushed Telangana into a state of despair. “What we see is a chief minister making reckless, toxic statements that shame the office he holds. No other CM in India has spoken about his own state with such contempt—calling it an AIDS patient, a cancer patient, and bankrupt.”
He added, “We in BRS have endured every abuse, every insult, including disgusting remarks about our leader’s death wishes. We’ve kept calm. But what Revanth said yesterday crossed every line. KCR has instructed us to speak out.”
KTR echoed KCR’s earlier warnings about trusting national parties. “What KCR said during the elections was prophetic—if you trust Delhi parties, Telangana will suffer. Now that prophecy has come true.”
