Telangana reserves 85% PG medical management quota seats for local students

Hyderabad: The Telangana government decided to reserve 85 per cent of postgraduate (PG) medical management quota seats for local students. The Health, Medical, and Family Welfare Department issued a government order to that effect on Monday.

As per G.O. Ms No. 201, private and minority medical colleges will allocate 85 per cent of management quota (Sub-Category–1) seats to Telangana students. The remaining 15 per cent will go to candidates from other states under the “All India Quota.”

Telangana PG medical seats benefit local students

Earlier, authorities filled all management quota seats at the national level. As a result, Telangana students missed numerous opportunities for nearly a decade. The government stated that it made this change in its second year in office to protect the interests of local students.

Last month, Disha newspaper highlighted the issue with the headline “85 percent seats should go to locals.” It reported that Telangana students lost about 382 PG seats each year. The report prompted the government to review and fix the policy.

Meanwhile, the Telangana Junior Doctors’ Association (T-JUDA) praised the decision. The group said the new quota would help many Telangana students secure PG medical seats within the state.
